Sometimes happens when you connect a USB drive, flash drive, or thumb drive or whatever you prefer to call it to a computer, it does not get recognized by the system, it is like if the USB drive is dead. if this happens to you, don’t worry, be happy, because it might be a simple problem.
As you can see from the screen above, the Flash drive ( removable disk) has been assigned drive letter F: but what do you think it would happened if another drive was already using the letter F: when I connected this removable drive? yes, you got that right!. it won’t show up here because the drive letter is already being used.
how do you get around this issue? is simple, you need to change the drive letter on the drive. to do thatRight-Click My Computer icon on your desktop and go to Manage:
I’m using windows vista with start menu view on the screen shot above; if you are using windows XP with start menu view, you will find my computer properties on the same place as the screen shot too.
when you click on manage the computer management console should pop-up:
click on Disk Management under the storage icon, then right-click on the removable drive and go to Change Drive Letter and Paths.. then click on Change and change the letter to anything but any letter you are already using under your computer system, then click OK:
Remember that even though the drive is not showing under your computer but it still will show up here with the letter that has been assigned. as soon as you change the drive letter to anything unique, the drive should show up under your computer with its respective drive letter.
